What to Wear to the Kentucky Oaks: Pink Fascinators, Dress Code & Oaks Day Style

What to wear to the Kentucky Oaks: why Oaks Day is pink, how to choose a pink fascinator, dress code by seating area, and outfit tips from a Louisville milliner.

What Is the Kentucky Oaks?

The Kentucky Oaks is the premier race for three-year-old fillies, run every year at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby, which is always the first Saturday in May. For Louisville, Oaks Day is the hometown day of Derby week — locals take the day off, and the crowd is famously stylish.

We make every hat in our Louisville studio, three miles from Churchill Downs, and Oaks Day is one of our busiest days of the year. Here's how to dress for it.

Why Is Oaks Day Pink?

Churchill Downs uses the Kentucky Oaks to raise awareness and funds for breast and ovarian cancer, and pink has become the day's official color. You'll see pink dresses, pink ties, pink Oaks Lily cocktails — and above all, pink hats. The winning filly is draped in a garland of lilies, which is why lily-inspired florals are a favorite Oaks Day detail.

You don't have to wear pink, but most people do, and it's part of the fun.

How to Choose a Kentucky Oaks Fascinator

When the whole grandstand is pink, the trick is to stand out through shape and contrast rather than color alone.

What to Wear to the Kentucky Oaks by Seating Area

Millionaires Row and Suites

Dress formally: a cocktail-length dress or tailored suit and a statement fascinator or hat. This is where the biggest, most sculptural pieces appear.

Clubhouse and Grandstand

A spring dress, jumpsuit, or skirt set with a fascinator. Choose comfortable heels or wedges — you'll walk more than you expect.

Infield

The infield is more casual and can be muddy if it rains. A sundress with flat sandals or boots and a lightweight fascinator headband is the smart choice.

Oaks Day Weather Tips

Late April in Louisville can be anything from chilly and rainy to warm and sunny. Bring a light layer, a compact umbrella or clear poncho, and choose a fascinator over a wide-brim hat — fascinators are far less likely to blow off and are easy to keep dry.

Oaks and Derby: One Hat or Two?

Many women wear a pink piece on Oaks Day and a different color on Derby Day. If you only want one hat for the weekend, choose a versatile blush, ivory, or pink-and-ivory piece that works with both outfits. Our Kentucky Derby hats for women guide covers Derby Day itself.

When to Order Your Oaks Day Fascinator
